Sheffield Renewables [1] is celebrating gaining planning permission for our Jordan Dam hydro power scheme near Meadowhall.

Rob Pilling, Managing Director said “Planning permission for our hydro power scheme is a boost to our plans for community owned renewable energy in Sheffield. It is particularly encouraging that so much of the work was contributed by volunteers.”

The scheme will generate around 310,000kWh of electricity per year. This is the amount used by about 80 typical family homes [2], providing a saving of around 150 tonnes of carbon dioxide per year [3]. The site was chosen because it is one of the best water power resources in Sheffield.

Uncertainty over planning permission was a significant barrier to the project’s development. Now that is has been overcome, we will be focusing on raising the money required to build the scheme. With volunteers leading the scheme’s development, Sheffield Renewables is keen to ensure that ownership resides within the Sheffield community. The aim will be to raise £250,000 towards the scheme through a community share offer in the Autumn. This will provide an ethical investment opportunity to individuals, organisations and businesses.

The remaining costs will be met with grants and loans. Profits from the scheme will support the development of more renewable energy projects in the city. Anyone that is interested can find out more about getting involved by visiting: www.SheffieldRenewables.org.uk

[1] Sheffield Renewables is a community and a social enterprise that develops, funds, builds, owns and operates renewable energy schemes. This means that we are run by and for local people and also that we are not-for-profit. Surplus money we earn is re-invested to support local sustainability. Much of our work is carried out by volunteers, which helps to reduce our costs.

Our schemes will contribute to city wide efforts to meet targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and for increasing local renewable energy provision. We reinforce these direct carbon savings through local outreach, communications and education. Our work also helps to strengthen social cohesion and community resilience by encouraging people to work together and share a common purpose, as well as by developing community owned assets. In pursuing our aims we work across the city for the benefit of everyone, while giving an additional focus to those areas close to our project sites.

Rob and Abigail were pleased to take part in the FridayNightRide on Friday, May 13th. They joined 30 other nightriders for a special ‘green’ tour in memory of Mervyn Smith, a regular nightrider.

The tour started at Kelham Island, where Abigail and Rob explained our plans for re-installing a water wheel in the existing wheel pit.

The ride went on to admire Sheffield College eco-buildings, Kettlebridge wood chip store and the biomass furnaces in Darnall, before arriving at Jordan Dam. Rob and Abigail gave an explanation of our plans for an Archimedean screw at this site, and answered many relevant questions.

A very useful evening meeting some of our existing supporters, and chatting to like-minded people.

Many thanks to Sheffield FridayNightRide for asking us along, and thanks to Simon Geller for allowing us to use his photo.

Twenty potential investors joined our MD, Rob Pilling, for a tour of our two planned hydro power sites on Saturday, May 7th. The tour was fully subscribed, and despite the rain, nearly all our expected participants attended on the day. The group was divided in two, with each group taking part in a site tour and hearing a talk at the Riverside Cafe/Bar by Mark Wells, one of our directors, to tell them more about our Share Offer.

Mark's share offer presentation got people thinking.

We were very pleased with the level of interest shown, reflected by all the questions asked and by the enthusiasm to see the forthcoming offer document. We also enjoyed the chance to get to know some of the many people who have expressed interest in investing in Sheffield Renewables. Several potential investors were not available for this tour, and we are hoping to arrange another one in early September. Anyone who signs up with us as a potential investor, will automatically be invited to the next tour.

As part of Sheffield Environment Weeks we had an open day on Sunday at South Yorkshire Energy Centre, where our office is situated.

It was a windy day, so getting the gazebo and display boards set up was a bit of a challenge. More work ahead for the Model Making group to make a frame for our banner and also for the display boards, so that in future we can enjoy the wind turning our small wind turbine, and not have to hold on to the display boards!!

It was a fairly quiet day, maybe because the half marathon was also on that day, but we still had some people signing up to receive our newsletters, three new potential investors and two new volunteers.

Our next chance to meet the public is at Peace in the Park on June 4th.

Sheffield Renewables had a successful stall at the launch event for Sheffield Environment weeks on Saturday, April 23rd in the city centre.

Five volunteers working in shifts staffed the stall until a sudden hail storm forced all stall holders to pack away and head for shelter. It was interesting to talk to lots of people about our schemes. Some were very interested, and some took some convincing about the worth of renewable energy, but we had useful conversations. We signed up 15 new supporters, 4 new volunteers and one new investor.

The sudden rain and hailstorm caused some slight damage to our Jordan Dam model, but a bit of paint should put it right. Luckily we have a model making day soon.
