As Sheffield’s longest running renewable energy co-operative, we have been a regular supporter of Heeley City Farm with donations from our Community Benefit Fund. In 2025, we donated enough money to help refurbish the farm’s aging Proven wind turbine and this year a further £3000 were allocated towards renewing solar panels on the farm’s office buildings. Homeco Energy, Sheffield Renewables’ regular installer, also supported the project by chipping in the rest to provide a 3kWp scheme of newer panels to provide a no-cost solution for the farm. The panels replace an old set of panels generating only 600 watts but have served the farm for over 20 years. The panels will provide around 2400kWh or £600 worth of green electricity and will contribute to lower their carbon footprint.
Dave Berry, one of our directors and project manager said:
“Our Community Benefit Fund is generated from the surplus created from our five solar schemes across South Yorkshire. The schemes have so far generated almost two million hours of electricity since 2014. Our members vote at our AGM on the projects they wish to support.
Sheffield is very lucky to have the farm and many carry fond memories of visits as children and with their children and grandchildren. The farm does great work on lots of community projects and their staff are dedicated in their work. Not only did our Community Benefit Fund support the farm, we were also able to support a tree planting project in Malawi for a second year.”
