There are two key solar technologies: solar thermal and solar-electric. Solar thermal is used to provide a low carbon source of hot water. It is a relatively simple technology and can be very cost effective. Solar-electric uses special light sensitive materials, which generate electricity when exposed to sunlight. These materials are still fairly expensive and it can take a long time to payback the original investment.
