The water quality in the Don has improved beyond all measure over the last 30 years and it is the water quality that is the major driver of bio-diversity in the river. Nature normally has its own way for getting over man-made structures. At the Ball Street weir fish already pass and under the EU Water Framework Directive fish passes will need to be provided over man-made obstructions. Without the weir at Kelham Island the goit itself would be dry and the existing bio-diversity would be destroyed, something the residents are keen to protect.

The question of the role of the weirs in the River Don is much wider than just Kelham Island and Sheffield Renewables does not have the power or resources to remove an individual weir. The planning process takes into account individual views on the river usage as well the views of the Environment Agency who are a statutory consultee on the application.

On a personal note and as a fisherman, I like the weirs because they actually allow for more bio-diversity than would be normal on a river such as the Don. If the weirs are removed then much of that bio-diversity would be lost. Weirs and goits have been part of the river system for over 500 years and it is arguable that it is now the “natural state” of the river system.

Man has made a huge impact, not only with weirs and goits but with reservoirs for drinking water, artificial banking for flood defences as well as huge amounts of abstraction for various usages including cooling conventional power stations. All have affected the "natural state" of the river. We cannot remove our effects without removing ourselves and decisions have to be balanced against the many uses of the river.

Please scrap the idea and instead remove the weir. The damage being done by hydro power schemes across the country is cumulatively enormous. The loss of species and resulting lack of biodiversity is a tragedy. The Don is recovering from hundreds of years of industrialisation. The right thing to do is to remove the man-made structures (the weirs) originally built for profit only and with no consideration at all for the life in the river, which simply wouldn't be allowed in these enlightened days. Now is your chance to do some good instead of extending the life of these weirs. If you want to produce electricity for 20 homes without harm to the ecology of the river Don put solar electric (photovoltaic) panels on the roofs of the houses. Be decent about this please, by turning your backs on the chance to take some taxpayer-funded grant money and profit from the artificially high feed-in tariffs. Please do the right thing not the lucrative thing. Get the weir out and let the river continue to recover.

Thank you
